Dr. Bram Vannieuwenhuyze and Jansonsius curator Peter van der Krogt and is part of the study programmes of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uva.nl\/discipline\/boekwetenschap\/onderwijs\/onderwijs.html?1574937880656=.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">Department of Book Studies<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">, part of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">There are courses offered in both the Bachelor and the Master classes:<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">The Bachelor course <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/studiegids.uva.nl\/xmlpages\/page\/2020-2021\/zoek-vak\/vak\/78429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">Maps and Atlases as a Culture Medium<\/span><\/a><\/em><span class=\"s1\"> is part of the minor track in Book Studies within the Faculty of Humanities, but can also be taken as a separate optional course. The course offers a broad introduction to the methodological aspects of map history research and highlights the most important evolutions and trends in the history of cartography, in particular of the Low Countries. In addition to attending lectures and taking an examination, the students also make some assignments in which they work with original material.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">Within the Masters in Book Studies students can opt for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gsh.uva.nl\/nl\/content\/masters\/boekwetenschap-kunst--en-cultuurwetenschappen\/studieprogramma\/studieprogramma.html?origin=HhdvOAVhQySn8GFttZi68g#Specialisatie-Historische-cartografie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">Historical Cartography study path<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">. In the first semester students follow a number of general subjects as well as the seminar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studiegids.uva.nl\/xmlpages\/page\/2020-2021\/zoek-vak\/vak\/78367\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">Map Analysis and Historical GIS<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">, in which a number of individual assignments and collective research projects on historical map materials are set up.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Students can also follow the tutorials in <a href=\"https:\/\/studiegids.uva.nl\/xmlpages\/page\/2020-2021\/zoek-vak\/vak\/78371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Historical Cartography<\/em> <\/a>or <em><a href=\"https:\/\/studiegids.uva.nl\/xmlpages\/page\/2020-2021\/zoek-vak\/vak\/78365\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">History Maps.<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li>In the second semester students do an internship at an institution with an old map collection and conduct their own map history research that culminates in the Master&#8217;s thesis..<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Furthermore, Allard Pierson regularly arranges the eight-part volunteer course Historical Cartography to professionals and volunteers who are interested in the history of cartography. Teachers are Jansonius curator Peter van der Krogt, Prof. Bram Vannieuwenhuyze, and curator cartography and travel Reinder Storm.
